Music Curriculum Year 1

Hey You! is written in an Old-School Hip Hop style for children to learn about the differences between pulse, rhythm and pitch and to learn how to rap and enjoy it in its original form. As well as learning to sing, play, improvise and compose with this song, children will listen and appraise other Old-School Hip Hop tunes.

Rectangular-KS1Units_Banana-Rap-Rhytm

The learning is focused around two songs: Rhythm In The Way We Walk (Reggae style) and Banana Rap (Hip Hop style). Pupils will Listen & Appraise other styles of music and continue to embed the interrelated dimensions of music through games and singing.

In The Groove is a song that was specially written for classroom use to teach children about different styles of music. This is a very easy song to learn and has been arranged in six different styles; Blues, Baroque, Latin, Bhangra, Folk and Funk. Each week pupils will listen and learn a different style of In The Groove.

Rectangular KS1Units_Round-And-Round

This unit of work is focused around one song: Round And Round – a Bossa-Nova Latin style. The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked.

Unicorn-01

This unit is based on a song about using your imagination. Pupils are able to listen & appraise, improvise ans compose. tool.

R_R_R_ad-02

This Unit of Work consolidates the learning that has occurred during the year. All the learning is focused around revisiting songs and musical activities, a context for the History of Music and the beginnings of the Language of Music.

History

At St Adrian’s, we strive to make history a curriculum full of curiosity and enquiry. Our intent is to provide pupils with opportunities that develop their love and passion of history, whilst developing their historical skills and knowledge through a progressive curriulum.

We aim to use resources which enable children to develop a deep understanding of historical events that have taken place. Teaching will equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, develop perspective and judgement and teach them that evidence may lead to different conclusions.

They will be able to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change (comparing then and now), the diversity of societies and relationships between different cultural groups (and the impacts they have had) , as well as their own identity and the challenges of our time.

By the time the children leave St Adrian’s, the children will have developed a range of historical skills and the knowledge of the development and change which has occurred in Britain over time. They will have developed discussion and enquiry skills to be able to see if lessons from the past have been or should be learned for the benefit of the future.

History in the EYFS

History in the EYFS is promoted through direct teaching and purposeful learning opportunities across different themes throughout the school year. We use planned themes and make the most of unplanned moments that present themselves to talk about artefacts and significant events to develop conceptual understanding of the passing of time. This includes birthdays, recent events and experiences as well as known points in history.

SEND

SEND at St Adrian’s

At St Adrian’s we work hard to ensure that inclusion, equity and aspiration are at the heart of every child’s experience here. We believe that children with special educational needs and disability (SEND) should participate fully in our school life and enrich our community.

Find out more about how we work to achieve this and what we offer your child in our SEND Information Report (see right hand side menu).

If you have a question or would like to discuss your child’s needs then please contact our Special Educational Needs & Disability Coordinator (SENDCo) Mrs Hart ( Maternity Leave ) Mrs Karen Gallaher is covering the role . Please make contact through the school office inco@stadrians.herts.sch.uk.

Design Technology

At St Adrian’s Primary School, we aim to use the teaching of Design and Technology to offer opportunities for the pupils to utilise their imagination and creativity to design and make products that have a real and relevant purpose. Through our curriculum, the pupils are able to make links to designs and designers throughout history, adding historical context and depth to their designs. We also aim to provide opportunities for pupils to critique, test and evaluate their designs and products and the work of others. Where possible, we aim to use cross-curricular links to add more depth and applicability to the products being made.

Art

At St Adrian’s Primary School, we recognise the importance of Art and Design within our curriculum as it permits curiosity, creativity and self–expression to develop alongside resilience and confidence. We prioritise the development and progression of artistic skills, using the topics as a vehicle in which the children can gain confidence mastering each skill. In each year as the children move through the school, there is a clear progression of these skills, which build on prior learning.

Within our skill-based curriculum, the children are encouraged to become critical thinkers through making observations, and discussing ideas and plans for their own work. They have the opportunity to invent, create and express themselves using different mediums whilst also exploring artistic styles and taking inspiration from a wide range of art and artists, including those from different periods and cultures. Each pupil keeps their own sketchbook which is used as a space for the children to explore and develop their ideas through sketching as well as evaluating finished ideas.

Music

At St Adrian’s, the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres. Our objective is to develop a curiosity for the subject, as well as an understanding and acceptance of the validity and importance of all types of music, and a respect for the role that music, in all its forms, may play in a person’s life. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.

Computing

At St Adrian’s our pupils will:

  • learn about the science and foundations of computing to develop understanding
  • develop skills to produce purposeful and creative content for a range of applications, and know that there are many careers they can aspire to by acquiring these skills
  • be competent, respectful, responsible and safe users of technology, discerning of its content, so that they have the opportunity to participate positively in a global community.

Our aim is to deliver fun and engaging computing lessons within a meaningful context that develop creativity, resilience and problem-solving/critical thinking skills. We look to embed knowledge and use of technology across the curriculum where it can enhance the learning experience, or be used to ensure learning opportunities are made accessible to every child.

Geography

At St Adrian’s we know that the children care about our world and want to protect it. Therefore, at the heart of the geography curriculum is ‘Protect our beautiful world’.

We believe that geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it.

The geography curriculum at St Adrian’s provides progression which enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Geography is an investigative subject, which develops an understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote the children’s interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
