Our Week in Year 1

Year 1 have had another brilliant week!

In our Maths lessons this week, we have continued to secure our understanding of numbers up to 10, thinking about which words we can use to compare numbers. The children learnt lots of new vocabulary such as bigger than, more than, greater than, smaller than, less than, fewer than, the same amount as, equal to and as many as. It would be great if you could continue to use these words at home so that the children become more familiar with them.

In our English lessons, we started to look at what shared writing is and completed a piece together. As a whole group, we planned and wrote our own version of Gervase Phinn’s poem ‘Noises Off’ using sounds from the dining room.

Ongoing home learning

Can I please ask that the children learn how to do their ties and top buttons over the course of the next week as these are the pieces of clothing which cause the most trouble to the children!

Additionally, can I ask that the children are encouraged to get ready as quickly as they possibly can at home as our PE lessons are currently being cut short by some time to allow for extra changing time.

Year 1’s Week

The children have had another great week in Year 1. They have started their split classes for English and maths and myself and Mr King are very impressed with the way that they have shown a great deal of maturity with this.

Yesterday, we started looking at creating a map of our classroom which developed today into creating a ‘Messy Map’ using the resources around the classroom. The children pretended that they were birds and decided what shapes they would see if they were in the sky. This was in order to develop the idea of an aerial view.

There is not necessarily any ‘formal’ homework this week as the children are still in transition but I would ask that they continue to read their books at home as part of ongoing homework.

Have a lovely weekend!

Year 1 Meet the Teacher Presentation

Thank you for all who were able to attend today’s meeting. For those of you who were unable to make it, or for those of you who would like to refresh your memories of everything spoken about, I have attached the PowerPoint.

Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

First Week in Year 1!

What a wonderful start to the school year! The children have settled in brilliantly by coming in enthusiastically in the morning and getting straight on with their ‘Busy Fingers’ activities and listening really well when it is carpet and learning time. I can tell that we will have a very successful year ahead of us!

Starting from next week, the children will benefit from the split classes for both English and Maths in which they will either be taught by Mr King or myself. This will be discussed in more detail at our ‘meet the teacher’ morning on Monday 10th September from 9:00am-9:30am. This will be a great opportunity to hear about all of the exciting learning we will be doing in Year 1, plus the logistics of the split classes.

There will be no formal homework set for this week as the children are still settling in, but I have sent home the children’s new reading records today along with the last word strip that they were on. Can I please ask that these books are read, read and read again in order for the children to gain the confidence that they need to read aloud and to revise the key sounds that they know. I will look to change the books next week.

Have a lovely weekend!

Year one

The children have been very busy this week, working in groups to build their own islands.  Thank you very much for their wonderful Islands home learning, which the children have used to help them in their creations.

The children performed brilliantly in their class assembly last week and you must be very proud of them all.  How blessed I am to be able to teach these children for another year!

Many apologies, but I have mislaid the cables for my camera, so there are no photos to post at present.  I look forward to being able to share photos with you again as I know that you all enjoy seeing them.

ENJOY THE SUMMER FAIR!

Year One designers

This week, the children were challenged to create a new boot for Mr Magnolia, who appeared to have mislaid his other one.  The children loved this activity and worked well in teams to brainstorm their ideas, research images on the internet, plan their designs and try out different drawing styles.

They are very proud of their final boots and their next task is to write an advert that will persuade Mr Magnolia to order a pair of their boots!

Year 1 plant potatoes

The children have been extremely enthusiastic during their Tuesday swimming lessons and have been very sensible while changing.  Well done, Year 1!

Year 1 swimming stars!

This week, the children have planted potatoes.  They looked very carefully at the chitted potatoes to see the strong shoots showing.  Over the next two months, the children will care for the plants and watch them grow.  Hopefully, we will have some potatoes to harvest in July.

Year 1 enjoy hot cross buns

This month, the children have done a wonderful job learning the Lord’s prayer. It was very moving for them to finish the Holy Thursday liturgy by saying this prayer when they returned to the classroom after ‘Jesus, Remember me’ had finished in the hall.

We cut our hot cross buns in half and then into four quarters.

Later in the morning, the children shared hot cross buns together, focussing on the symbolism of the cross.  Thank you very much for your kind donations of buns, which were greatly enjoyed by the children.

Have a very happy and holy Easter together and enjoy your Easter celebrations that the children are looking forward to on Easter Sunday!

Year One historians

On Friday, the children joined up with Year Two for History Day.  They enjoyed four different activities, which encouraged them to find out about the past through exploring the clues that real artefacts held.  The children had some wonderful ideas and developed their skills in historical enquiry.
