News from Year 1 – from wild plants to Mother’s Day

It’s been another busy week for Year 1 this week. We have enjoyed focusing on plants this week in Science, focusing on both wild and garden plants. The highlight was hunting for wild plants within our school. We found lots of daisies and dandelions, keeping tallies of what we discovered.

We have made some beautiful Mother’s Day cards during learning through play this week. We used forks to to print flowers onto cards, completing them with thoughtful handwritten messages. We hope you enjoyed the Mother’s Day assembly, we really enjoyed performing as both a school and a class, even though we might have been a bit shy!

Also during learning through play, we have been acting out the Preparation of Gifts. We really liked dressing up and blessing the bread and wine (Jesus’ body and blood), just like a real priest.

Have a fabulous weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – lots to celebrate!

It’s been another busy week for Year 1 this week. We started off the week by celebrating British Science Week. As we are learning about Plants in Science, we took the theme of ‘growth’ for science week and planted our own beans. We will start to track the growth of the beans over the coming weeks.

We then celebrated St Patrick’s Day. We learnt the story of St Patrick and made hats to celebrate. We also wore green to mark the occasion.

At the end of the week, we all wore red to celebrate Comic Relief. This went hand in hand with learning about the common good and helping others whenever and wherever we can. We created our own red nose designs to mark the occasion.

To top off the week, we had a session with Rocky Steady. Rocky Steady provide opportunities for children to learn new musical instruments within school. Please see the letter sent home with your child if you’re interested in more information. We had so much fun and even got to make our very own class band!

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1

It’s been another jam packed week for Year 1 this week. We have really enjoyed our History learning about Toys. This week, we compared a Tudor doll and a modern day equivalent. The Tudor doll had no moving parts and was made of wood. The other doll was colourful and had lots of clothes to change into. If you have any older toys you would like your child to share, please send it in with them on Mondays.

Here are some photos of what else we have been getting up to this week:

A big thank you for all the book donations from the class’ Amazon wish list. We still have a few books on the list so if you would like to donate one to our class library, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you to the children who have brought in their baby photos. We have really enjoyed sharing them as a class. Please don’t forget to bring a picture of yourself as a baby for our RE homework, adding a caption about how you have changed and what you can do now that you couldn’t before. These need to be in by next Friday (18th March).

Have a relaxing weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

Books, glorious books!

Dear Year 1 parents and carers,

Thank you for the generation donations so far to the class’ Amazon wish list. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is.

These books will help us build our class reading areas, developing children’s love for reading and passion for books.

Many thanks,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – so much to celebrate!

This week has been another busy one. From Shrove Tuesday to World Book Day, we have had so much to celebrate!

On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday by discussing the true meaning behind the pancakes. We learnt that Shrove Tuesday marks the start of Lent, where Jesus made a sacrifice for 40 days and 40 nights. We made our own paper pancakes and discussed what we might sacrifice over Lent, so we can be just like Jesus and become closer to God. We also learnt about Wales’ patron saint, St David. We made our own Welsh flags and created dragons using junk modelling.

Today, we celebrated World Book Day. We dressed up as our favourite book characters, from Mary Poppins to the Worst Witch. We had a lovely time reading to children in Reception and listening to our favourite stories being read to us by both Mrs Palmer and Miss Battams. We even designed book covers for our own versions of our English focus book, Billy and the Beast.

Don’t forget to check out our updated RE blog here too!

Have a great weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – toys, shapes, maps and much more!

What a busy first week back to school after the half term break! In Year 1 this week we have been making shapes from other 2D shapes, learning about old toys in History and locating the UK on maps in Geography.

Take a look at some pictures of what we have been up to this week:

Thank you for all the generation donations at our cake sale too. We raised a record amount of money! Thanks to the parents who helped out with the cake sale and parents that donated those delicious bakes too.

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – a week of weeks!

What a way to end the half term! We have had lots going on in Year 1 this week. We started the week by having an intruder in our classroom. We used the clues left in our classroom and descriptions from eyewitnesses to create a wanted poster for the beast.

It was Safer Internet Day on Tuesday and we enjoyed creating our own avatars for an online game, including usernames and passwords. We discussed why we have to keep certain pieces of information private whilst being online.

It was also Children’s Mental Health Week this week. This year’s theme was ‘Growing Together’. We used the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to show how the caterpillar grew both physically and mentally, into a beautiful butterfly. We also created some stars to show our goals and aspirations for when we grow up.

After half term, we will be focusing on toys in History. If you have any older toys you wish to share with the class, please feel free to bring them in. Here’s the curriculum overview so you can check out what else we will be learning about in Spring 2.

Have a restful half term and enjoy the break,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – Number Day!

This week in Year 1, we celebrated Number Day. As we have been looking at shapes in Maths this week, patterns fitted in nicely with our learning. We made lots of different patterns using things around the classroom, patterns which included both different shapes and colours.

In English, we have sadly finished our book ‘I want my hat back’ by Jon Klassen, writing some excellent stories with our own innovated versions. Next week, we will be starting our new book, ‘Billy and the Beast’ by Nadia Shireen.

Thank you for the children who have handed in their RE homework. If you haven’t already, please could it be handed in by next Friday (11th February).

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – shapes, shapes and more shapes!

This week has been another busy week for Year 1. In PE this week, we played our first ever game of dodgeball. It was great fun and we enjoyed putting our throwing skills into practice.

In RE we have been finishing off our topic of Special People. We have been learning who were special people for Jesus and why he was also a special person. We will be moving onto our next topic, Meals in preparation for Lent. Keep your eyes peeled for the updated RE blog post soon.

In Science, we have been describing how materials of objects we have found around the classroom feel. We have been using lots of exciting adjectives such as ‘squishy’, ‘bendy’ and ‘stretchy’. This has then linked nicely to our learning about 3D shapes in Maths this week. We have been looking for different 3D shapes in everyday objects around the classroom.

As we have a lovely parent reading volunteer now starting with us in Year 1, most of the children’s reading books will be changed on a Monday. Please discount the stickers that have been stuck in your child’s reading records about book changing days. This does not apply anymore. The rest of the class will change their books throughout the week with Mrs Ruffell.

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – the Feast of Epiphany

We’ve really enjoyed returning to school after the Christmas break! Yesterday was the Feast of Epiphany, when the Wise Men or Magi visited Jesus. To celebrate the Epiphany we read stories, made crowns and reenacted the reactions of the Magi visiting God’s own son.

Please make sure children have their PE kits ready for Monday as they will have their first PE lesson of the year. With the colder weather, please pack a pair of warm jogging bottoms and a hoodie for the children to wear with their PE tops.

We are also starting our new RE topic, Special People. Read more about it here and don’t forget to complete the new RE homework too.

Miss Battams and Mrs Brunt 🙂
