It’s been another busy week for Year 1 as we get settled into our new classrooms and routines. We have really enjoyed seeing some of the home learning that has been sent in with the children. Please bare with us as we continue to work with Herts for Learning to resolve the issue with log in details for the Goggle Classroom. We hope to have log ins out to you all next week.
Please see a copy of the Show and Tell rota below. Show and Tell is a great way to develop turn taking, plus speaking and listening skills. We will have time every Friday so please make sure your child is prepared with something to either show or tell.
What a great first week back to school and a big welcome to our new Year 1 class. It’s been a fabulous start to the year, with lots of getting to know you activities and finding our new seats and pegs.
We have been enjoying reading our new class book in English, Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson. In groups, we even rearranged some sentences that were muddled up, making sure we had a capital letter at the start and full stop at the end of our sentences.
We have also enjoyed starting our new topic in RE, Families. We have been reading and creating our own psalms about how God loves and cares for us, like our families. We used some actions and signs to learn a psalm about God’s love.
Google Classroom log ins are on their way, in the meantime, please see the information pack your child was given today with further details about the new home learning. Reading books have now also been assigned on the e-library too.
It’s the summer holidays! What a hot, hot week it has been. We really enjoyed being a part of the Year 6 leaver’s assembly this week. We wish them luck in their new schools!
I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the kind gifts and cards. Teaching Year 1 has been an absolute pleasure. Have a well earned rest over the summer holidays.
Here’s a selection of our favourite photos from Year 1:
It’s been another busy week for Year 1, and the last full week too! There have been lots of celebrations this week, from choir performances to talent shows.
We started the week with a teddy bear’s picnic. It was lovely to spend some time all together as a Key Stage sharing stories and our teddies. We also got to watch the Year 6 production, which they had put lots of hard work into. Well done Year 6!
We were also treated to a lovely performance by our gymnasts, Rock Steady and choir groups. It was so lovely to also see their hard work paying off with such confident performances. Thank you for sharing them with us.
There will be no homework set this week. Yet there will be a letter and spellings to practice over the summer holidays. You will also have details about how to access to our fabulous new e-library too!
What a lovely week we’ve had this week. We have really enjoyed making smoothies in DT and taking part in Sports Day.
We started the week by focusing on what makes fruits and vegetables what they are. Fruits have seeds and usually grow from flowers. Vegetables can grow in or above the ground. We then taste tested different fruits and vegetables to find out which we would like to include in our smoothies. We really enjoyed the sweet mangoes but weren’t too keen on the bitter spinach! In our final lesson, we learnt how to chop and prepare the fruit and vegetables (carefully and hygienically!) ready to be made into smoothies. The end product was so tasty!
We also took part in a sponsored bounce arranged by our fabulous PTA! Please make sure you get your sponsorship money in as soon as possible. Your child has been sent home with a form and an email was sent out with more details last week.
We really enjoyed our Sports Day this week. We got to take part in lots of activities including throwing, running, jumping and balancing. Thank you to all the parents who came to support us. Here are some picture below from the day.
Well done to our cheerleaders who have worked so hard in their morning sessions. They put on a fabulous show, with pom poms and all. Super stars!
We have also been learning about the country Kenya, as it is a country in the Commonwealth. We used the book Handa’s Surprise to find out more about the country, as is it set in Kenya. We linked our learning about different fruits in DT to Kenya too, as some ingredients for our smoothies are grown there, like mangoes.
This week we focused on mass, in more ways than one. On Wednesday, we attended a mass for the Feast of St Peter and St Paul. It was a great experience to be back at St Barts and walking there and back with the Year 6s.
We also started our new topic in Maths, mass! We really enjoyed comparing the weight of everyday classroom objects, using words such as ‘heavier’ and ‘lighter’ to describe their mass. We look forward to continuing our mass learning next week.
We finished the week by starting our new book in English, Julian is a Mermaid by Jessica Love. It is a heart warming story of a boy who dreams of being a mermaid. We started our first lesson with a ‘wow moment’, an old letter encased in a treasure chest, adorned with jewels. We are looking to learning more about Julian and his dream next week too.
What a varied week we’ve had in Year 1 this week. We started the week by focusing on volume and capacity. We really enjoyed experimenting with different containers and lots of coloured water, describing and comparing the capacity of each container using words such as ’empty’, ‘full’, ‘half full’, ‘less than’ and ‘more than’. Keep a close eye out for different containers around your house, describing and comparing their capacity.
We ended the week by learning about Judaism. We had a special workshop to learn about Moses and the Exodus. We also carried on the learning back in the classroom to understand how Moses became the leader of the Israelites. To understand the Exodus story, we also got to try some unleavened bread and dress up like Moses and the Israelites.
It’s been scorching in Year 1 this week and our learning has been on fire too!
We are really enjoying our new book in English, Iggy Peck Architect. We have had fun creating our own structures out of objects around the classroom, just like Iggy! We’re looking forward to continuing the story next week.
In Maths, we have been focusing on money. We have been learning to recognise notes and coins. In an increasingly cashless society, please make sure you remind and show the children these coins and notes regularly. It was great to hear so many of the children had a money box or a piggy bank too.
We ended the week by taking part in the Father’s Day assembly. We really enjoyed performing our class song and taking part in the whole school singing. We also made some ‘tie-rrific’ cards for our dads/male caregivers too.
As always, it’s been a busy first week back from the half term break. Well done to all the children for taking part in Phonic Screening Check. They did a great job and really enjoyed show casing their phonics learning. The children’s scores will be issued in their end of year report.
In Maths this week, we have been looking at time, focusing on o’clock and half past. If your child isn’t already, please encourage them to wear an analogue watch to school everyday. This will help the children get used to reading the time regularly and becoming more familiar with the directions clockwise and anti-clockwise.
Don’t forget our RE homework about our new topic ‘Being Sorry’. Please complete the sheet below (which can also be downloaded from the Google classroom too) and return it by Friday 17th June 2022.
What a fabulous week to end this half term. We really enjoyed our first school trip for many of the children. We ventured to Whipsnade Zoo to consolidate our learning about animals in Science this half term. We discussed which animals were carnivores, herbivores or omnivores and how they adapted to their habitats. Have a look at some pictures from our day:
We finished the week by celebrating the Queen’s platinum jubilee. We came to school dressed in blue, red and/or white and enjoyed a picnic on the field with our families.
Have a lovely break and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled on our Google classroom for activities to do over the half term,
