News from Year 1 – swimming success!

Even though it has only been a short week, we have packed a lot in! We returned from the Easter holidays starting our new RE topic, Holidays and Holydays. Check out the updated blog post here.

We also started swimming this week. We were all very excited and much enjoyed the coach trip too.

On Friday, we celebrated both Earth Day and St George’s Day. To mark Earth Day, we though about ways we could care for the environment. We also created posters to encourage others to look after our planet better. We really enjoyed listening to the story, ‘Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish’ too. The story made us think about the small changes we can make to help our planet.

To commemorate St George’s Day, we listened to the story of St George and decorated England flags. We also dressed up in red and white too! We then acted out the story using stick puppets with a partner, it was so much fun!

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – Happy Easter!

What a fabulous end to a wonderful term. We have really enjoyed learning about the Easter story this week. On Tuesday, we took part in the station of the cross assembly. It helped us remember the story of Easter.

On Wednesday, we had our Easter parade. Well done to all the children that entered. The winners were Aila and Alby, congratulations!

On Thursday, we even got to meet some chicks! As part of a programme called Living Eggs, we were able to handle newborn chicks. We linked this back to Easter Sunday and the coming of new life, like when Jesus rose again.

Thank you for the generous gifts for ,my birthday, I am very lucky to have such a lovely class (and parents!).

Have an ‘egg-cellent’ Easter and a relaxing break,

Miss Battams 🙂

Lent and Easter at St Adrian’s

As part of our journey through Lent, this week, we have had our own Holy Week and Easter liturgies. The week started with a very thoughtful Stations of the Cross service led by our inspiring Year Six Chaplaincy Team. They created a tableau and reflection for each Station of the Cross and the children sang beautifully as part of this service.

In contrast, our joyful Easter Parade celebrated the children’s amazing creativity. Children from Foundation Stage made some superb Easter bonnets, Key Stage One children created brilliant Easter Gardens and the Key Stage Two children displayed their immense talents with a wonderful mix of liturgical art. The Chaplaincy Team had the unenviable task of choosing two winners for each class, but we were very pleased to celebrate everyone’s wonderful artwork. Well done to you all!

We wish you all a very happy and holy Easter.

News from Year 1 – from wild plants to Mother’s Day

It’s been another busy week for Year 1 this week. We have enjoyed focusing on plants this week in Science, focusing on both wild and garden plants. The highlight was hunting for wild plants within our school. We found lots of daisies and dandelions, keeping tallies of what we discovered.

We have made some beautiful Mother’s Day cards during learning through play this week. We used forks to to print flowers onto cards, completing them with thoughtful handwritten messages. We hope you enjoyed the Mother’s Day assembly, we really enjoyed performing as both a school and a class, even though we might have been a bit shy!

Also during learning through play, we have been acting out the Preparation of Gifts. We really liked dressing up and blessing the bread and wine (Jesus’ body and blood), just like a real priest.

Have a fabulous weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – lots to celebrate!

It’s been another busy week for Year 1 this week. We started off the week by celebrating British Science Week. As we are learning about Plants in Science, we took the theme of ‘growth’ for science week and planted our own beans. We will start to track the growth of the beans over the coming weeks.

We then celebrated St Patrick’s Day. We learnt the story of St Patrick and made hats to celebrate. We also wore green to mark the occasion.

At the end of the week, we all wore red to celebrate Comic Relief. This went hand in hand with learning about the common good and helping others whenever and wherever we can. We created our own red nose designs to mark the occasion.

To top off the week, we had a session with Rocky Steady. Rocky Steady provide opportunities for children to learn new musical instruments within school. Please see the letter sent home with your child if you’re interested in more information. We had so much fun and even got to make our very own class band!

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1

It’s been another jam packed week for Year 1 this week. We have really enjoyed our History learning about Toys. This week, we compared a Tudor doll and a modern day equivalent. The Tudor doll had no moving parts and was made of wood. The other doll was colourful and had lots of clothes to change into. If you have any older toys you would like your child to share, please send it in with them on Mondays.

Here are some photos of what else we have been getting up to this week:

A big thank you for all the book donations from the class’ Amazon wish list. We still have a few books on the list so if you would like to donate one to our class library, it would be much appreciated.

Thank you to the children who have brought in their baby photos. We have really enjoyed sharing them as a class. Please don’t forget to bring a picture of yourself as a baby for our RE homework, adding a caption about how you have changed and what you can do now that you couldn’t before. These need to be in by next Friday (18th March).

Have a relaxing weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

Books, glorious books!

Dear Year 1 parents and carers,

Thank you for the generation donations so far to the class’ Amazon wish list. If you haven’t seen it yet, here it is.

These books will help us build our class reading areas, developing children’s love for reading and passion for books.

Many thanks,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – so much to celebrate!

This week has been another busy one. From Shrove Tuesday to World Book Day, we have had so much to celebrate!

On Tuesday we celebrated Shrove Tuesday by discussing the true meaning behind the pancakes. We learnt that Shrove Tuesday marks the start of Lent, where Jesus made a sacrifice for 40 days and 40 nights. We made our own paper pancakes and discussed what we might sacrifice over Lent, so we can be just like Jesus and become closer to God. We also learnt about Wales’ patron saint, St David. We made our own Welsh flags and created dragons using junk modelling.

Today, we celebrated World Book Day. We dressed up as our favourite book characters, from Mary Poppins to the Worst Witch. We had a lovely time reading to children in Reception and listening to our favourite stories being read to us by both Mrs Palmer and Miss Battams. We even designed book covers for our own versions of our English focus book, Billy and the Beast.

Don’t forget to check out our updated RE blog here too!

Have a great weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – toys, shapes, maps and much more!

What a busy first week back to school after the half term break! In Year 1 this week we have been making shapes from other 2D shapes, learning about old toys in History and locating the UK on maps in Geography.

Take a look at some pictures of what we have been up to this week:

Thank you for all the generation donations at our cake sale too. We raised a record amount of money! Thanks to the parents who helped out with the cake sale and parents that donated those delicious bakes too.

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – a week of weeks!

What a way to end the half term! We have had lots going on in Year 1 this week. We started the week by having an intruder in our classroom. We used the clues left in our classroom and descriptions from eyewitnesses to create a wanted poster for the beast.

It was Safer Internet Day on Tuesday and we enjoyed creating our own avatars for an online game, including usernames and passwords. We discussed why we have to keep certain pieces of information private whilst being online.

It was also Children’s Mental Health Week this week. This year’s theme was ‘Growing Together’. We used the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar to show how the caterpillar grew both physically and mentally, into a beautiful butterfly. We also created some stars to show our goals and aspirations for when we grow up.

After half term, we will be focusing on toys in History. If you have any older toys you wish to share with the class, please feel free to bring them in. Here’s the curriculum overview so you can check out what else we will be learning about in Spring 2.

Have a restful half term and enjoy the break,

Miss Battams 🙂
