News from Year 1 – all to the zoo and the Queen’s jubilee!

What a fabulous week to end this half term. We really enjoyed our first school trip for many of the children. We ventured to Whipsnade Zoo to consolidate our learning about animals in Science this half term. We discussed which animals were carnivores, herbivores or omnivores and how they adapted to their habitats. Have a look at some pictures from our day:

We finished the week by celebrating the Queen’s platinum jubilee. We came to school dressed in blue, red and/or white and enjoyed a picnic on the field with our families.

Have a lovely break and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled on our Google classroom for activities to do over the half term,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – all things Art!

This week we have been focusing on Art. We have really enjoyed learning about natural sculptures, taking inspiration from renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy.

We started the week by looking at photographs of Goldsworthy’s word. We discussed what the sculptures were made out of and whether we liked it or not. Here are some pictures of us in action:

Taking inspiration from Goldworthy’s natural sculptures, we made miniature models using clay. We thought about the shapes Goldworthy’s used in his own work to help us create ours.

We then did some observational drawings of natural object we found around school. We used magnifying glasses to help us sketch the finer details of leaves, flowers and even some feathers that we found.

We look forward to creating our own group sculptures from natural materials next week.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – plants, glorious plants!

It’s been a busy week again in Year 1. We have really enjoyed being able to get outside in the glorious weather this week!

We started the week off by planting some flowers donated to the May altar in the hall. It was a great opportunity to learn how to plant and care for flowers (pictures to follow). We have also been taking it in turns to keep the plants watered throughout the week, another important learning opportunity.

As the weather gets warmer and the sun gets brighter, please ensure your child applies suncream before leaving for school in the mornings. Then bring in a roll on or spray suncream, labelled with your child’s name to be kept in the classroom so they can reapply it themselves throughout the day.

We also really enjoyed our swimming lesson this week too. We are becoming a lot quicker at changing and love our coach rides to and from the pool!

Our zoo trip is fast approaching, so if you have not made your contributions yet, please do so via Arbor.

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

May is the month of Mary

During our May Day liturgy, the Chaplaincy Team led us as we gave thanks for Mary, the mother of Jesus. All the children created a poster that celebrated Mary’s role as Queen and these have been used as a prayer focus for all the classes. Thank you so much for all the amazing plant donations that have been used to really show how deep our thanks is to Mary. Our service ended with a tremendous May Pole dance by Year 4.

News from Year 1 – May, the month of Mary

It has been as busy as ever in Year 1 this week. We started the week by celebrating Mary. May is the month of Mary so we have been making our own May altar in learning through play this week. Thank you for the donations of flowers for the school May altar in the hall. We enjoyed a lovely service on Tuesday to crown Mary too.

You should have received a letter about Numbots, please ensure your child is having at least 4 minutes of practice each day. This will really help the children rehearse their addition and subtraction skills.

We’re also off to the zoo! You should have received an email about the trip, please make your voluntary contribution as soon as possible.

We have now started our sharing books. Your lovely Amazon book donations have now become our sharing books for the class. To find out more about our class sharing books, please see letter inside your child’s sharing book.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – keeping our steps up

What an excellent first full week back to school. We have packed so much in, from hatching chicks to meeting an athlete!

We started the week buy visiting the hatching chicks based in Nursery. We have been learning about different animal groups in Science, and identify the chicks were in the bird group as they are laid in eggs, have feather and wings.

Later on in the week, paralympian Kate Gray gave us an inspirational talk about never giving up. Her story was very inspiring and she even joined us for the daily mile.

As some of you may know, we have started using Numbots to help children with their addition and subtraction knowledge. Each child’s log in details should be stuck into their reading record or tucked away in their book bag. A letter also went home today with some more information too.

Don’t forget, RE homework needs to be in by Wednesday 4th May. Please the updated RE blog for more details.

News from Year 1 – swimming success!

Even though it has only been a short week, we have packed a lot in! We returned from the Easter holidays starting our new RE topic, Holidays and Holydays. Check out the updated blog post here.

We also started swimming this week. We were all very excited and much enjoyed the coach trip too.

On Friday, we celebrated both Earth Day and St George’s Day. To mark Earth Day, we though about ways we could care for the environment. We also created posters to encourage others to look after our planet better. We really enjoyed listening to the story, ‘Dinosaurs and All That Rubbish’ too. The story made us think about the small changes we can make to help our planet.

To commemorate St George’s Day, we listened to the story of St George and decorated England flags. We also dressed up in red and white too! We then acted out the story using stick puppets with a partner, it was so much fun!

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – Happy Easter!

What a fabulous end to a wonderful term. We have really enjoyed learning about the Easter story this week. On Tuesday, we took part in the station of the cross assembly. It helped us remember the story of Easter.

On Wednesday, we had our Easter parade. Well done to all the children that entered. The winners were Aila and Alby, congratulations!

On Thursday, we even got to meet some chicks! As part of a programme called Living Eggs, we were able to handle newborn chicks. We linked this back to Easter Sunday and the coming of new life, like when Jesus rose again.

Thank you for the generous gifts for ,my birthday, I am very lucky to have such a lovely class (and parents!).

Have an ‘egg-cellent’ Easter and a relaxing break,

Miss Battams 🙂

Lent and Easter at St Adrian’s

As part of our journey through Lent, this week, we have had our own Holy Week and Easter liturgies. The week started with a very thoughtful Stations of the Cross service led by our inspiring Year Six Chaplaincy Team. They created a tableau and reflection for each Station of the Cross and the children sang beautifully as part of this service.

In contrast, our joyful Easter Parade celebrated the children’s amazing creativity. Children from Foundation Stage made some superb Easter bonnets, Key Stage One children created brilliant Easter Gardens and the Key Stage Two children displayed their immense talents with a wonderful mix of liturgical art. The Chaplaincy Team had the unenviable task of choosing two winners for each class, but we were very pleased to celebrate everyone’s wonderful artwork. Well done to you all!

We wish you all a very happy and holy Easter.

News from Year 1 – from wild plants to Mother’s Day

It’s been another busy week for Year 1 this week. We have enjoyed focusing on plants this week in Science, focusing on both wild and garden plants. The highlight was hunting for wild plants within our school. We found lots of daisies and dandelions, keeping tallies of what we discovered.

We have made some beautiful Mother’s Day cards during learning through play this week. We used forks to to print flowers onto cards, completing them with thoughtful handwritten messages. We hope you enjoyed the Mother’s Day assembly, we really enjoyed performing as both a school and a class, even though we might have been a bit shy!

Also during learning through play, we have been acting out the Preparation of Gifts. We really liked dressing up and blessing the bread and wine (Jesus’ body and blood), just like a real priest.

Have a fabulous weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂
