We have been busy once again: this time, we learnt the basics of first aid from Daisy who taught us, not just about how to get help in an emergency, but how to provide some basic first aid too. In the session, the children learnt about assessing an emergency situation with DR ABC, before practising putting a casualty in the recovery position and CPR.

As well as Children in Need, today is World Multiplication Day. We spent our maths lesson, putting our knowledge of multiplication facts to the test, deciphering codes hidden amongst the times tables.

We have had great fun exploring structures, especially thinking about what makes a structure stable. We used construction materials to build our own models and discovered that cylinders are particularly strong structures. We found many manmade structures like climbing frames, slides, tables and chairs used cylinders. To find out why, we created our own cylinders and discovered that they could hold many things. One cardboard cylinder was strong enough to hold a table tray! Our next challenge is to use what we have learned to design our own chair for a bear and then create it out of card.

Year 4 sat respectfully during today’s Remembrance Service and sang very well. Thank you to the children who created beautiful “stained glass windows” for this year.

The children always enjoy the library trip and yuekeles on Friday.

They have finished learning about addition and subtraction and will start Area next week. Their versions of “The Varmints” are progressing very well and they are including lots of expanded noun phrases which we have practised lots.

Next Friday there will be a bake-off competition for CHildren in Need, so year 4 will have their cake sale on Friday 24th.

We have been looking at Autumn and how the seasons change across the year.

We have also talked about armistice day, remembrance and the significance of poppies.

Year 4 was a credit to the school and their families at St Bart’s on Wednesday. They are also representing the school very well on the weekly swimming trips, when they are making very good progress with their skills.

We have moved onto Addition and Subtraction with 4-digit numbers in Maths and are writing our first story, with the children creating interesting sentences using expanded noun phrases, prepositions for detail and personification. The inspiration is a book called “Varmints”, which the children have really enjoyed exploring.

They are also enjoying the ukelele lessons and the strumming sounds very tuneful!

Luckily, the rain has not been falling at breaktimes so the children can still get outside at play. Long may this continue!

Monday is photograph day , so the children should come to school super-smart like they usually do.

This week in  geography, we embarked on our new unit: ‘ Uk, Towns, Cities and Features.’ We used maps and atlases to identify physical geography features. We then created detailed maps for each county, incorporating both its human and physical features. 

Year Six have got straight back into the swing of things following the half-term break.

On Wednesday, we headed to St Bartholomew’s for the All Saints where our chaplaincy team helped lead the worship. Everyone in year six excelled, shepherding our friends in year two and guiding them through the mass. It is lovely to see how well the children take care of the younger members of our school community.

There has also been plenty to learn as we have embarked on new topics in many areas of the curriculum: in English, our writing is inspired by Nicola Davies’ thought-provoking ‘The Promise’, whilst in reading, we are sharing Kate DaCamillo’s ‘The Tiger Rising’. We are also looking forward to learning more about the impact of the Tudors in history and our visit to Hampton Court Palace.
