Another short and busy week with some hints of what is to come.

Coronation Week

Year 1 have had a week preparing for the King’s Coronation.

On Wednesday, the children learned about the importnat landmarks in London which will be seen by the King as he travels through London in his carriage. The children made pictures and wrote about the King, and have made a beautiful display which can be seen in the assembly hall. The children also learned the words to God Save the King in their music lesson.

Amongst the work on display is some of the computing work which the children have been involved with. In computing they have designed coronation pictures using a paint software.

Finally, today we had our own roayl photo booth whereby the children each had the photgraph taken of them wearing their red, white and blue clothes.

We wish you all a lovely bank holiday weekend celebrating the King’s coronation.

Year 1 go swimming

Here we all are, after our first swimming lesson at Westminster Lodge. We were superstars and showed that we are ready to learn new skills all the time!

Easter Week at School

We have looked at the Easter Story and coloured our palm Sunday crosses. We have learned about different Easter traditions around the world and decorated a German inspired Easter Branch.

View from my desk!

Then the wonderful Easter Gardens arrived and they were a fantastic display.

They were beautifully creative and inspirational. Congratulations to all the children! I wish they were here all the time (the gardens).

It has been such a busy but fruitful term in Year 1. I am looking forward to returning in the Summer term,to hopefully more outdoorsy weather and great learning. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with crafty fun and outdoor adventures.

HAPPY EASTER!

Spring Showers

Its been a week of multiple absences and changeable weather!

In science the class learned about the changes in daylight hours that occur at this time of year, in relation to the Spring Equinox.

It was beautiful in the playground when the sun shone.

Rainbow Bridges
Bases
Blossom

In PE we were practicing skills for rounders. The main teaching point being that when we throw the ball we want the other person to catch it so how can we help them?

Stanley’s Stick

This week we have finished our English block on Stanley’s Stick by writing our own version called Sarah’s Sock. We have had a funny time in class exploring all the different things an odd (or pair) of socks can be!

In Maths we have been using manipulatives to make numbers to 40 and we are learning to order, read and write them as well.

We have also spent some time focusing on whole body listening to encourage better focus.

Year 1 – Feb.24th

We have had a busy week back from Half-term.

In maths we have been looking at 2d and 3D shapes. We have labelled everything in the class and played I spy using the properties of shape.

We have been singing this lovely shape song.

On Ash Wednesday we received Ashes and made a simple cross. We talked about what we could give up for the period of Lent.

As it gets nearer to Easter we will decorate these in recognition of a more joyful celebration.

Mental Health Awareness Week

This week in Year I, as part of Mental Health Awareness Week we have talked about connections and worked with different people in our class and other classes. We have taken part in daily Yoga sessions and learnt about being safe when connecting with people on the internet.

We have been drawing our feelings using different media. Mostly we have been learning how to share our feelings in a positive way and help ourselves feel better when we are sad.

Number Day

This has been another busy week in Year 1.

We have been learning different ways to subtract within 20, how to change the meaning of a word using a suffix or a prefix, all about maps and sharing special meals with special People.

We took part in the wonderful Electric Umbrella workshop on Thursday and finished finished the week with a fun number day in aid of NSPCC on Friday.

Have a restful weekend!

News from Year 1 – happy harvest!

And just like that, it’s the half term! What a busy week we’ve had to finish off the half term.

We also started our new book, Send for a Superhero! by Michael Rosen,  a very funny superhero adventure in an exciting blend of picture book and comic book storytelling. We have been describing the villains, Filth and Vacuum and predicting what might happen next in the story. If you would like to share this story at home, have a watch below:

We also performed our class song, Big Red Combine Harvester, at the Harvest assembly this week. Even though we were a little nervous at first, we really enjoyed sharing our hard work with the rest of the school.

We also enjoyed having a tennis session with Mr Curry from Batchwood tennis club. We learnt lots of tricks with the rackets to improve our hand/eye coordination and got used to handling the tennis balls too.

Have a lovely half term and a well earned rest,

Miss Battams 🙂
