Y1 RE learning

Our RE topic for the next four weeks is based around the theme of Waiting.

We will be considering the big questions:

How do you feel when you are waiting for something you like?

What do you find difficult about waiting?

What can you do to make waiting easier?

How can we best prepare for Christmas?

Advent is a time when we appreciate the love in our lives and prepare to celebrate love becoming a reality in the person of Jesus. Christians at Christmas celebrate the gift of Jesus, given by God as a sign and expression of God’s love. Giving and receiving reflects the truth that all life is given by God and life is given meaning through the gift of Jesus.

Word of God

“This is what love is: it is not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the means by which our sins are forgiven. Dear friends, if this is how God loved us, then we should love one another. No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in union with us, and his love is made perfect in us.” (1 John 4: 10-12)

Prayer and reflection:

Today a Saviour is born!
In the stillness of the night God enters human history
through the birth of his only Son.
He is our peace and hope.
In him we praise God for his
goodness to us in giving us so great a gift. Amen.

We shall be focuses on the following scriptures:

Luke 1: 26-31, 38 – God’s Story 2 page 55
Luke 1: 39-45 – God’s Story 2 page 56
Luke 2: 1-7 – God’s Story 2 page 58
Luke 2: 8-20 – God’s Story 2 page 59

Key words for the topic are:

waiting, preparing, messenger, visit, celebrate, Advent, Jesus, Mary, Elizabeth, Joseph, shepherds, angels, Christmas, Bethlehem, manger, worship, wreath

RE home learning:

Play ‘hide and seek’ inside or out – discuss how it feels to be the person who is waiting. You could write these feelings down, accompanied by a picture.

News from Year 1

Another busy week for Year 1 this week. We took part in National Fitness Day this week. We used our PE lesson to complete as many minute long activities to help improve our fitness as possible. We completed hopscotch, circle leg in the air, hula, flap your arms like a bird, crab walk, dance, sit down and stand up all for a minute each. We had a lot fun!

Please don’t forget that the orange spelling book and blue homework folder are due in every Wednesday. This then gives us time to stick in the new homework for the next week.

We’ve also created a borrow box for books the children can take home and read with their adult as an extra reading challenge. There is also a handy prompt bookmark with each book with questions you can ask your child before, during and after reading the story. Please don’t forget to sign the books in and out using the log, found in the basket.

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

News from Year 1 – Mercy mass and more!

It’s been another busy week for Year 1 this week. We really enjoyed today’s Mercy mass, putting all our hymn practice into… practice! Thank you for everyone who joined us and for the picnic afterwards too. The weather was kind to us!

Thank you again to parents who attended the parent morning on Tuesday. If you were unable to make it, the slides and curriculum overview should have been sent out to everyone. I have also popped a copy of the curriculum overview on our Google classroom.

Please don’t forget to accept your child’s invite for the Google classroom to access the assigned homework. Thank you to the parents who have let me know about any issues so far, we will get these sorted. If you do not have access to a printer, please see me for a copy of the handwriting homework.

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

A wonderful first week in Year 1!

What a wonderful first week we have had in Year 1! It been a tiring week but a week of learning and getting into our new routines. Well done to all the children for trying their best this week.

We now have PE every Monday and Wednesday, please ensure your child has brought in their PE kit ready for these lessons.

Parents, don’t forget the Year 1 parent morning on Tuesday 14th September at 9am. It will be held in the classroom and you’ll be able to find out what we’ll be getting up to in Year 1. It’s also an opportunity for you to ask any questions about the up and coming year.

Have a restful weekend,

Miss Battams 🙂

Welcome back, Year 1!

What a busy couple of days we have had settling into our new classroom. We have really enjoyed seeing our friends again and getting to know our new teachers, Miss Battams and Mrs Brunt.

Thank you to the children who have brought in their PE kits already. Please make sure you have your kits with you next week as our PE days are Monday and Wednesday.

If you also have any reading books or records at home, please bring them in so we can updated them.

Have a great weekend and keep your eyes peeled for more information on the Year 1’s parents’ morning.

Miss Battams 🙂

Thank you!!!

A huge thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your extremely kind words and gifts. I am very grateful!

It has been an absolute pleasure to teach your children and inspire their learning. What a year it has been! The class has been so resilient and have shined bright every single day. I am very lucky to have been able to be their teacher.

I wish you all a restful and fun summer! Hopefully the sun stays shining like today.

I will be leaving my Youtube videos up so if you have a spare moment, please feel free to put them on for the children to what. I do recommend keeping Phonics fresh in their minds. Great websites are

Thank you again and I’m sure our paths will cross again.

Best wishes,

Miss Perry

This weeks learning.

This week the children were challenged to complete 4 tricky challenges. The class were very enthusiastic and enjoyed completing them.

In English we are looking at the story Here Comes Mr Postmouse. We looked at the journey of mail. We shall be spending next week writing letters.

In Maths, we are securing our understanding of Numbers to 40 and making sure we have a good understanding of place value.

We have continued our topics on The UK and Plants. The children have each planted a flower each and various vegetables. They are keeping a diary entry of their flower to watch it grow.

The class looked fab all in red. Thank you for supporting Comic Relief.

After Easter, I shall be setting home learning every Friday which can be found on our Google Classroom. It shall consist of spellings each week and a topic based activity every couple of weeks.

Next weeks challenges:

Thank you for all your continued support,

Miss Perry

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had a lovely and peaceful Christmas. Mrs Ruffell and I would like to say a huge thank you for your extremely generous End of Term Gifts. Autumn Term was a fabulous term, jam packed with lots of learning opportunities. Here is some of the fun we got up to during the last week.

Year 1 Home Learning shall be uploaded onto Google Classroom www.classroom.google.com . I shall be emailing you all today with the log in details for this and other platforms we may use during Remote Learning.

The classroom that we shall be using is titled ‘Year 1 20-21’

You can find a helpful guide here:

For today’s learning, can your child/ren complete the following:

Write a thank you letter to Father Christmas. Remember to include the correct punctuation, capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Try to use adjectives in your writing to give more detail.

Draw a portrait of someone who is special to you and write why.

Write 3 sentences to describe the weather.

This week in Year 1

What beautiful Advent wreaths the children have created. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into them.

The children worked so hard finishing our English text Mr Big. The sequence finished by writing a letter from the perspective of Mr Big, focusing on joining two single clause sentences with ‘and’. I have noticed a huge improvement in everyone’s handwriting and the pride they are taking in their work.

We have been focusing again on Adding Numbers to 20 following Maths No Problem. We have been using the method of grouping 10 then adding the remainder. To support their understanding I demonstrated how to show Dienes to show Tens and Ones.

My phonics group have started to learn the five split digraphs. This week we have been learning ‘a_e’ and ‘e_e’. We have been noticing which spelling patterns we can use to support our spellings.

Mrs Ruffell’s group have been practising, ‘oo'(book), ‘oo'(moon) ‘ai’. The emphasis has been on writing words using these sounds.

Next weeks challenges are:

After Christmas, I shall be adding another challenge to support the children’s learning further.

Have a relaxing weekend.

Miss Perry

Huge welcome to Year 1

What an exciting start to Year 1 we have had. It is wonderful to have the whole class back together with such enthusiasm for what the year brings. The class have settled in very well and it’s lovely how positive they enter the classroom with readiness to learn. With the developing outdoor area, we are making the most of the weather taking learning outside for some lessons.

Over the summer, I transformed the classroom to support Continuous Provision to enhance child initiated learning. I believe this has helped with the transition from Reception to Year 1. The children will have ‘challenges’ to complete throughout the week in the different ‘zones’ of learning. The amount of challenges will build throughout the year. For the Curriculum Overview, you shall find a link on the right hand side of the class blog. The journey to Continuous Provision is very exciting and allows the children to repeatedly secure their understanding of learning throughout the week.

Year 1 is a big Phonics year. Entering Year 1, children are ‘expected’ to be secure in all Phase 3 sounds, ready for learning alternative sounds in Phase 5. Phase 4 is a very small phase where no new sounds are introduced, but supports children to read quicker. Please continue to read with your child and encourage them to recognise Phase 3 sounds within words.

If there is anything you would like to discuss, I am happy to speak at the end of the school day (from a distance). 😀

Big smile,

Miss Perry
