The Beginning of the End for Year Six

The start of the final half-term is always a funny time for year six – the SATs are finally behind us and we have enjoyed the school journey that we had been looking forward too for so long, and whilst the children are naturally beginning to look forward to the adventure of secondary school, there is still so much to do and enjoy here.

The end of key stage assessments for writing are based, not on tests, but on the writing the children do day-in and day-out, so high expectations and good effort are still as important now as they have every been. We have finished the content of the maths curriculum and so we are keeping our maths understanding ‘fresh’ through a number of projects: this week, we have been making plans for our bakery and look forward in the coming weeks to putting on our masterchef hats and cooking up a treat, using our data handling and measuring skills to make this happen.

We also have to begin looking towards the end of term and planning to go out with style and so, to that end, I have completed the worst job I have to do each year and cast our leavers’ production. We have our scripts and parts to learn: this is always an ensemble piece, where the children can enjoy putting on something special and memorable which can only be achieved by working together. I do not doubt that they will have a blast and that they will do themselves (and us) proud.

I plan to share the limited photos from the Isle of Wight at the open evening towards the end of this month as part of our celebration of our learning. For now, here is a taster from the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

Nursery – 07.06.2024

Now that summer term is here, why not visit the fish and chip shop, the children have enjoyed putting the fish and chips in the cones and sitting on the bench to eat them.

This week the children did an observational drawing of flowers in a watering Can. They worked really hard and now these beautiful pictures are up in the gallery in the cloakroom.

In RE we thought about being a friend of Jesus, we drew a picture of ourselves with Jesus.

Year 2 explore habitats at Rye Meads

The Year 2 children all had a wonderful visit to RSPB Rye Meads.  The rain kept away and we were rewarded with lots of minibeasts in a range of habitats including woodland, meadow and pond.  The children had many questions and the air was filled with excited voices as the children found so many interesting creatures. A fabulous time was had by all and we are very grateful for all of the parents who accompanied us on the trip as we could not have gone without you! Year 4’s Day out at Kew Gardens

We all had a fantastic day at Kew Gardens, learning about plants and exploring a fraction of the many beautiful and amazing things at this world-famous site. The children were enthusiastic, energetic and represented the school very well. Emma, the teacher, said how much she enjoyed their sense of fun and excitement. She led sessions where we learnt about plant explorers from the past and today and the equipment they need : can your child tell you why you need a trowel when you go looking for plants? The children practised describing plants, using knowledge from their time at primary school such as the names for parts of a plant. They also classified leaves using a key where they thought of the yes/no questions themselves. The children became acquainted with the resident geese, young and old, who appreciated some left-over breadstick and would have happily shared the rest of the children’s lunches, too. The weather was perfect and thank you for sending the children so well-prepared, with everything you were asked to provide. We were all amazed by The Hive, which will give us some insight into what a “pavilion” is in our D&T learning. The plants in the Temperate House and outside the Palm House provided opportunities for the children to practise their sketching skills which they have been learning with Mrs Bartley. The children will use what they did and learnt today in learning back in class.

A huge thank you, as ever, to the parent helpers. Wednesday is not an easy day to get time away from work and we really appreciate the effort made in coming and having to make up for the lost time in either work or jobs at home. Thank you also to Miss Jilly, from the office, who came with us – there aren’t any photos of her, unfortunately. Again, I am sorry for the high cost of the event but we did have a great day, and a full one as they journey there was completed in just under an hour.

Reception – Another half term!

Hello parents and children,
This week we added the final touches to our garden. It is looking wonderful and also attracting lots of bees and butterflies. The children are feeling very proud of what they achieved and every day they will check for weeds and water the plants.

In Little Wandle this week we have been looking at -ed word endings, deciding whether it makes -ed sound like in hunted or -d sound like in bumped. We also read words with -est endings like softest and strongest. We also learnt the last 2 tricky words for reception:

Please practice all tricky words at home too, so your children can feel confident recalling them. Don’t forget to continue reading both practice book and library book.

In Maths we explored sharing and grouping which are both different methods of division. We talked about sharing as dividing a set equally between a certain number of groups. And grouping as dividing a set by placing a certain number of items in each group. We learnt that to share we need to take one object at a time and give it to one child before taking the next object and giving it to the next child, repeating this process until all the objects are gone or each child has an equal amount.

Year 2 get active!

As part of our PE, Science and Maths, we have been learning about Time and how many different movements we can do in a minute. We had great fun using stopwatches to time ourselves and have got really good at press ups, star jumps, squats, jump rope as well as jumping and hopping. Numeracy Day!

In Year 3, we celebrated Numeracy Day with a series of fun and educational activities. We created our own songs and raps, focusing on times tables and important maths keywords we have learned so far. After spending time perfecting our lyrics, we performed our creations on stage, showcasing our musical and mathematical skills.

Nursery – 24.05.2024

This week in maths we did some activities and used the words ‘more’ and ‘fewer’. We had our own teddy bears and had to give them cubes, one bear with more and one with fewer. We also played a game with our friends where we had to close our eyes and take bears from a bag, we then talked about who had more and who had fewer.

In RE we talked about the word ‘friend’ and made a list of how to be a good friend, the children came up with the following suggestions ‘share our toys’, ‘give our friends a cuddle if they are sad’ and ‘ask a friend to play’.

We also designed our own ‘teddy paperchain of friendship’.

Reception – Church’s Birthday!

Hello children and parents,
It won’t be enough to say that we all had a lovely day today! Our Pentecost party was such a success with glorious weather, delicious food and most importantly …. wonderful children!!! They practised hard and learnt our very special song, remembered important facts about Pentecost and were able to explain in detail why we are celebrating today. Well done children.

On Thursday we made delicious red jam sandwiches, decorated with balloons and bunting. We set up the food and cut grapes, strawberries and watermelon. Thank you children for being so helpful. Our families felt very welcomed in our rather red classroom 🙂

In Little Wandle this week we continued reading long words, however some of this week’s words were extremely long… handstand has 9 sounds!!! We also learnt 4 new tricky words:

In Maths we continued working with shapes, however this week we learnt how to identify shapes within shapes and that shapes can not only be separated to make new shapes, but also that shapes can be combined.

W/c 13th May in Year 4

We have learnt more about Anglo-Saxon life this week, focusing on the justice system. Some children recommended a very severe punishment for a misdemeanour in school, so I think they understand the general principle! Our RE topic is “Building bridges” and the children showed good insight into the “bridges” which act as bonds between children and how these need to be strong for relationships to flourish. The children have really enjoyed the beautiful book called “Cinnamon”. They have been putting themselves in the position of the lead character and are writing a diary entry by her.

I have been impressed by the children’s understanding of decimal fractions this week. Some more children have “gone green” on TTRS and all are making progress in learning the TT facts. Please keep this up.
