Year 5 Week 8

Although it was a short week, it certainly didn’t feel like it.

The children seemed to have had an excellent break and were eager to tell me about all they had done.

Parents’ Consultation  Evening:

Thank you  to all of you for coming to the consultation evening: it was really useful and constructive being able to share ideas and insights.

All Saints’ day:

We had a great day on Wednesday- the church was full of all manner of saints as the pupils sported their various costumes. At the end of Mass, Year 5 were able to work with Year 1 by giving them a tour of the church and passing on their knowledge.

Science / English

We started looking at a new class book this week ( ‘ The Unforgotten Coat’ by Frank Cottrell Boyce ) .  In the story, the children conduct an experiment which we felt compelled to replicate using Alka Seltzer , blu-tac and some camera film canisters.

Wishing you all a great weekend,

Mr Creaton

Year 5 Week 6

As usual, we have been very busy here in Year 5 . Highlight of the week has to be the performance of ‘Potatoes’ at the Harvest assembly. Well done to everyone.

Also, I was very pleased with the sporting prowess with six of the boys in the class who received their first call up to the senior squad to play football  against Park Street; being edged to the spoils by a very strong Park Street team.  And then, later in the week, beating Windemere in another closely fought game.

Have a great weekend,

Mr Creaton

Year 5 Week 5

This week we have been completing our own legends stories in English and the children have been pushing themselves to be more adventurous with their vocabulary and sentence constructions.

In Art, we have continued our still life compositions by making oil pastel drawings of fruit – some of the children’s work looked good enough to eat (unlike some of the actual bananas which I’d left ‘ripening’ at home a little too indulgently).

In science, we looked how shadows vary through the day and we started using Ordnance Survey map symbols in Geography.

Have a great weekend,

Mr Creaton

Year 5 week 4

This week in Year 5 we have been fine tuning our work on legends in our work on traditional stories and legends for literacy , focusing on using more complex sentences. In  science we have been learning about phases of the Moon and how they arise   and for geography we have been using atlases to locate main cities and settlements in The British Isles. In Art, we practised arranging shapes and colours as a prelude to our still life compositions .

Today (Friday) was our Fitness day.  Everyone had a  great  time and I’m sure the children will sleep well tonight after all their exertions.

School Council Elections

Finally Congratulations to Nelleke and Joseph on their election to the post of Year 5 School Council representatives.  I’m sure they will do an excellent job.

Have a great week,

Mr Creaton

Year 5 Home Learning

Please find attached this week’s home learning tasks.

The children have their grammar activity already pasted into their books but I have attached a copy here for reference.

Agreement Between Nouns, Pronouns and Nouns

This week’s reading comprehension is all about what the Aztecs ate at mealtimes.  Please note,  children will need to write complete sentence answers to sections A and B in their books.

I have decided to make section C optional this week.

Reading Comprehension Y5 – Task 3

For mathematics, Mr Bedford and I have set our respective groups their homework on my maths.  My group were given reminders of their login details earlier this week.

Have a nice weekend,

Year 5 Autumn week 3

Another lovely week has gone by at St Adrian’s topped by the Mercy Mass and a picnic in the gorgeous sunshine.

Earlier this week, in English,  we have been thinking about how King Arthur felt when he first met the loathly lady.  The children did a freeze-frame in order to really empathise with the characters.

We have also been looking at Roman numerals in maths.  We all enjoyed a bit of Roman Numeral Bingo although catch phrases such as ‘sweet XVI’  and           ‘ Key of the door – XXI’   probably won’t catch on as well as their Arabic numeral counterparts.

Hope you all have an enjoyable weekend,

Mr Creaton

Y5 Autumn Week 2

It has been a very busy  week in Year 5 and the holidays are now but a distant memory. But we have enjoyed ourselves.

In PE, we  have started learning tennis and already I can see  signs of the next Venus Williams and Andy Murray.

In Science, we have been learning about the Solar System. We then made our own scale models of the planets to show how their sizes vary as do their distances from the Sun.

On a separate note, the homework now needs the use of a password in order to access it.  The children have been told the password and have written it in their homework books.

Wishing you all an enjoyable weekend,

Mr Creaton
