Nursery - St Mary the Mother of God
22nd May 2026
On Monday when the children arrived at school, they were excited to see the butterflies that had emerged over the weekend. We have been busy observing them and yesterday we let three of them go. We went round to the prayer garden and said goodbye to them. One butterfly wasn't ready so we popped him back in the net. We said goodbye and let him go today, unfortunately one of the butterflies has not made it.
Nursery say goodbye to the butterflies
RE
In RE this week we thought how our church is a special place. We looked at the different things that are in a church such as the crosses, pictures, stain glass windows, pews, fonts and mantle. We role played going to church, putting our hands in the Holy water and blessing ourselves before the service. We alo drew a picture of our family at church using our family photos to hep us.

Caterpillars
On Monday we moved all 5 cocoons to the net, it was very tricky! The children were able to have a look at the lid with the cocoons on and the pot. They asked lots of questions like 'are they still alive?' and 'What happens to the pot?'. Next week we should (fingers crossed) have 5 butterflies. We will observe them for a few days before letting them go.
Moving the cocoons to the net
On Wednesday we read the story 'The Cautious Caterpillar' and thought about the different stages that happen before a butterfly is a butterfly! Cody the caterpillar was very unsure about being a butterfly but with the help of his friends he embraced the change and enjoyed having wings, more legs and eating different things.
We learnt the life cycle of a butterfly: egg, caterpillar, cocoon/chrysalis, butterfly.
The children sat at the table and worked very hard to put the pictures in the correct order.

RE
This week we looked back at Jesus' life and all the wonderful things he did. We learnt that the 12 Apostles worked very hard to tell others about Jesus and how He lived his life, as well as how He wanted others to live. They spread his message throughout Jerusalem as well as establishing early communities - marking the start of the church.
We looked at pictures of the life of Jesus and the children had to pick one to draw e.g. washing feet, talking to the children, feeding the 5000.

RHE
This week in RHE we thought about "People Who Help Us". We looked at different people who we might need help from including policeoffiers, firefighters and doctors. We talked about what they wear and what they need to help us in different situations.
The children drew pictures of a person who might help us.

David Attenborough
Last week the children learnt about a very special man, David Attenborough. I told them that it was his birthday and that he was 100 years old, the children were very surprised. We sang Happy Birthday to David and gave him 100 claps. We watched some video clips of him and talked about the work he does. We talked about how for the past 80 years (maybe even more) he has looked after the world God created, how he helps to protect the natural world, fights pollution and promotes environmental education.
Over the past couple of days the children have worked really hard on creating these beautiful paintings. They worked with Miss Hughes to pick an animal, talk about the colours needed and then where and how to copy the picture they had in front of them.
I think they really are amazing, well done Nursery!

This week we looked at the initial sound ‘y'. In the box we found a yoyo, the colour yellow and a yoghurt. Can you find something beginning with the ‘y" sound at home? Upload a photo to tapestry if you do 😊

Butterfly
One of the butterflies emerged from his cocoon this afternoon, the children were very very excited! As you can see in the picture there is a red, blood like liquid underneath on the net. It is not blood but a waste byproduct called meconium. This is the leftover material from the pupal stage that is expelled from the abdomen, usually 1-2 hours after emerging from the cocoon, to make room for air and flight muscles.
I will put some food in the net for over the weekend and hopefully by Monday some of the other butterflies will have emerged.

Soft toys
Just a reminder that teddy's and soft toys need to stay at home please. There have been a lot coming in over the past couple of weeks and they are causing upset. We have plenty of teddy bears and soft toys in class for the children to play with.

RE
This week we read "My Best Friend, Holy Spirit" so the children could understand a little more about the Holy Spirit. We talked about how the Holy Spirit is like an invisible friend who watches over us, always listening and wanting to help us.

We looked at some pictures together of how the Holy Spirit is represented in Art - wind, fire, water, dove of how people imagine the Holy Spirit to look.
"That one is like a hand"
"Are those the Holy spirits, those angels?"

RE
In RE this week we continued our work on Pentecost. We learnt that after Jesus had gone back to His father in Heaven, all His friends were together in one place. Suddenly a noise came from Heaven which sounded like a strong winds and the noise filled the house. All of a sudden they saw something that looked like flames of fire that stood over each person - they had been filled with the Holy Spirit. We made our own Holy Spirit headbands for our Pentecost party.

I am sure the children have been keeping you well informed about the caterpillars, they have grown a lot bigger in just over a week. They are now at the top of the pot ready to start the process of turning into a cocoon! Hopefully once we return after the bank holiday we will have cocoons. Once they have been cocoons for a few days we will move them into the net.

RE
This week in RE the children learnt about when Jesus went back to his father. Jesus spent lots of time with his friends the Apostles, but then it was time for him to go to Heaven. We watched a clip of Jesus lifting up into Heaven and created our own artwork. We have been working really hard on drawing people with a head, a body and arms and legs coming out of the body, and not the head. I think they look wonderful.

Maths
In Maths this week we looked at height and length, we made some tall towers, some short towers, some short snakes and some long snakes. We also played a game where we had an animal card and had to say whether it was tall, long or short and put it in the right place.
Nursery Maths
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
We have started to learn the actions to our class story for this half term and soon we will be painting the story to put up on the wall. There was lots of excitement on Tuesday as 5 very hungry caterpillars arrived in class. We talked about the pot they come in, the food (which is at the bottom), how long they will be caterpillars and how to look after them.

World Earth Day
On Wednesday it was World Earth Day. We talked about how to look after our wonderful world and did some activities to support this. We sorted out pictures into things that are good for the earth and not good for the earth, we had a light free day in Nursery and we also went on a litter pick and found a whole bucketful of rubbish.

Welcome Nursery Parents and Carers to the first blog on our new website. Just like before, this will be the place to find out what we have been learning about each week in Nursery.
Easter Holidays
It's been lovely to see everyone this week after what has felt like a long 2 weeks. Thank you parents and carers for uploading all your easter activities as it's good for the children to talk about what they did during the holidays. If you would still like to add photos to tapestry please do and we will share them.
RE
In RE this week we talked about why we celebrate Easter. The children were good at remembering and talking about what happened on Good Friday. On Tuesday we talked about what happened on Easter Sunday and the wonderful news that Jesus rose again. The children were very interested in this and asked lots of questions. We created some artwork this week and today we made an Easter Garden.

Literacy
This half term we will be reading the story ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.

This week we spent time reading the story and watching the online version, if you would like to watch it again at home, here is the link:
We are also waiting very patiently for the caterpillars to arrive, hopefully early next week. We will observe the stages that we see: caterpillar, cocoon and then butterfly! We will release them when they are ready in the last week of term.
Sponsored Relay Race
The nursery children did so well yesterday in their sponsored relay race. The children all did at least one lap holding the batton and then we decided to do lots of laps of the field together.
Thank you so much for sending back the sponsor forms, please ensure all sponsor money is in by Friday 24th April. Once we have added up how much we raised, I will talk to the children about what new toys they would like for the outside area.
Here are just a few photos from yesterday, I will add the rest to Tapestry so please check on there in a few days time.
